Decades spent as a high-flying scholar for all things Confucian makes him the perfect choice to lead China’s premier centre for studying the Great Sage, its gilded halls set to propel his tired university up the academic league tables.

There’s just one problem. It’s not built yet.

More used to extolling righteousness in a lecture hall or TV studio, Ying Wu now finds himself negotiating dodgy backroom property deals and grovelling for the benevolence of self-serving donors. When the foundations are as fabricated as the salaries of unhired academics, the only person getting some sleep is the student at the back of his classroom.
