Join us at Veranda Books to celebrate women in translation month!

We are delighted to announce our event to celebrate two fantastic Chinese to English Translators in collaboration with the Veranda Books. Georgia De Chamberet of Bookblast will be hosting a thoughtful discussion between Annelise Finegan and Nicky Harman.

Annelise has recently translated My Sister’s Red Shirt by China’s premier author and head of the China Writers Association, Tie Ning.

Nicky is working on a translation of short stories of the 1930s author, Ling Shuhua.

About Annelise

Annelise Finegan is Academic Director and Clinical Associate Professor of Translation at the NYU School of Professional Studies.

She has translated works by authors such as Lu Min, Hsu Yen Ling and Can Xue, including the novels The Last Lover and Love in the New Millennium, for which her translation was longlisted for the 2019 Man Booker Prize

About Nicky

Passionate about spreading Chinese literature to English readers, Nicky Harman has translated the works of many renowned Chinese authors into English. Harman has won several awards, including the 2020 Special Book Award of China.

When not translating, she promotes contemporary Chinese fiction to the general English-language reader through the website Paper-Republic.org. She also blogs, gives talks, mentors new translators, teaches summer school and judges translation competitions. She lives in the United Kingdom and tweets as the China Fiction Bookclub @cfbcuk

About Georgia

Georgia de Chamberet is an editor, translator, cultural journalist and former book publisher. At the start of her career, with Quartet Books, she published works by Tahar Ben Jelloun, Annie Ernaux, Simon Leys (the pen name of Pierre Ryckmans), and Daniel Pennac, among others. In 1997, she founded BookBlast CIC (formerly Ltd). The first company website went live in 2000. She is the literary executor of her godmother, the historian and traveller Lesley Blanch whose memoirs she edited. On the Wilder Shores of Love: A Bohemian Life was published by Virago and La Table Ronde.
